Contrary to what you might have heard on talk radio or TV, it’s not quite that simple. What’s true is that the Tax Policy Center, a well-regarded think tank, calculated that 47% of Americans would owe no federal income taxes for 2009, up from the usual 38% who typically owe no income tax on April 15. Most still pay Social Security taxes, Medicare taxes, sales taxes and property taxes (if they own any property).

Do Americans really want health care reform? Yes, but not the comprehensive overhaul currently being debated by Congress.

Is the U.S. government making another costly and open-ended commitment? Can anyone point to a government program that is self-financing and not essentially bankrupt?

The Democratic Senate is working toward a ghastly compromise on immigration reform that includes a biometric national identification card for all Americans. The stated purpose of this national ID, which an employee must present before getting a job, is to prevent undocumented workers from being employed.

“Democrats pledged that the so-called ‘stimulus’ would create jobs immediately and keep the unemployment rate from going above 8 percent,” Boehner said. “But since the ‘stimulus’ was signed into law, more than 3 million private-sector jobs have been lost. Americans are asking, ‘Where are the jobs?’ but all they’ve gotten from Democrats in Washington is more spending and more debt.”

Obama signed a one-year extension of the Patriot Act and if you are not an American who lives under a rock, you should know what that entails. Democrats have said that this is giving power to our government that is not entirely justified, frankly, because defining a “terrorist’’ is a very difficult thing to do.

Someone once said that he hoped the President failed. It was back on September 11, 2001, just a short while before the terrorist attacks when those words were uttered, by James Carville, at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor. Of course, because of the date, and because what happened that morning, his remarks might have been missed by some. But not by all.
